About
The Lavender Convention is the name of our organization, as well as our community engagement platform “The Lavender Convention”. We are a start-up 501c non-profit dedicated to the eradication of LGBTQ+ stigma over the next ten years.
The Lavender Convention has a laser focus on the subject of LGBTQ+ stigma, an issue that negatively impacts LGBTQ+ members of our society. The Lavender Convention is clear that our society is a diverse tapestry of communities and demographics. These demographics are defined by commonly held characteristics that form a particular subset of society’s members.
In the case of the LGBTQ+ demographic, its demographic nature is defined by an attraction toward the same gender – an attraction toward both genders – or gender identity that is different than the biological gender at birth. Like other demographics, beyond our defining characteristics, we are quite diverse.
Unfortunately, our human family has a proclivity to caste a suspicious eye toward those who are different. This negative trait drives a need to otherize minorities. This process results in the development of narratives that hold these others to be suspicious, dangerous, or inferior. The next step in this process requires legal and cultural penalties designed to control these dangerous others.
In particular, LGBTQ+ people are subjected to a particular line of attack often described as the culture wars. The Lavender Convention calls for a permanent ceasefire in the never-ending culture wars. Our organization simply refuses to continue this never-ending process or give life to these false narratives. This narrative has no basis in fact or science.
The Lavender Convention is a national movement designed to end LGBTQ+ stigma. We begin our ten-year journey by holding Lavender Conventions in local communities across the United States. The subject of each convention is LGBTQ+ stigma. These events include speakers, music, panels, food, discussions, and mindfulness. These events are not just LGBTQ+ produced; they are a product of the LGBTQ+ participants and our straight allies! The Lavender Convention is built upon a reality; without our straight allies, stigmatization will never end.
Over the next five years a variety of additional services and interventions are planned. We will form partnerships with faith organizations, corporate partners, and community building organizations. We will increase our knowledge regarding stigma by holding focus groups after each convention.
The Lavender Convention will also form partnerships with academic institutions to pursue research. This work will power our efforts to utilize best practices in the eradication of LGBTQ+ stigma. These academic partnerships will also inform our media campaigns to reduce stigma.
